Sebastian Moeritz (President)

Sebastian is an entrepreneur with an extensive business experience in a number of international markets. After studies in social sciences and economics, he has previously been specialising in property and investment.

Since 1996 he has been involved in a number of information technology related ventures and joined dicas, a developer of real-time video coding solutions, based in Germany, as its CEO in the beginning of 2001. dicas is an MPEG-focused video coding specialist and a leading developer of MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, MPEG-4 and 3GPP compliant real-time video coding solutions providing the industry with the highest quality core technology for digital video.

Sebastian is the President of the MPEG Industry Forum (MPEGIF) since 2004 and has been on MPEGIF's Board of Directors since 2002 serving as Treasurer. Sebastian is a regular speaker at industry events as well as the author of various articles and opinions in broadcast and multimedia publications. He is also the co-author of the book "Understanding MPEG-4 - Technology and Business Insights" (with Prof. Dr. Klaus Diepold of the Technical University of Munich, Germany).

He is listed in "Cable and Satellite Europe's Euro 50 for 2004", which features the leaders in Broadband and Pay-TV across Europe, Middle East and Africa.

David Price (Vice President)

David Price is currently Vice President, Business Development at Harmonic Inc., based in Sunnyvale, California where he is responsible for pioneering Harmonic's leading position in digital video broadcast, distribution and IP based delivery technologies.

David was previously Vice-President with TV/COM International, in San Diego (formerly Oak Communications), where he was responsible for the Sales Account and Operations management functions. TV/COM produced the world's first MPEG-2 DVB video encoding systems. Originally from the UK, David came to the US as Vice President of M/A-COM Linkabit, now Hughes Network Systems.

David has over 19 years experience in the telecommunication industry during which he has successfully carried out executive management responsibilities in sales, engineering and operations and general management functions for satellite and terrestrial based communications technology providers. David has written many articles for trade publications and journals around the world and has also appeared on a number of business television and radio programs in the US, Europe and the Middle East.

David has lectured at UCSD and is a frequent guest speaker at many of the worlds leading symposiums on advance communications technology. Originally, an electronics engineer on the design team of the worlds first CAT scan system, he graduated from CIT with a Fellowship MBA and has an Honors Bachelors degree in Cybernetics, Instrument Physics and Mathematics.

Rich Mavrogeanes

Rich Mavrogeanes has been in the communications industry for more than 30 years. Prior to founding VBrick in 1997, he was a founding executive at several other successful technology companies. His background includes senior technical, marketing and management positions at Avidia, Switched Network Technologies, Dataproducts Corporation and General DataCom. He received the "Innovator Of The Year" award, was named one of 17 industry executives to Federal Computer Week's "Federal 100" list for making a difference in Federal Information Technology, was named a "A List" executive by Telecom Magazine, received the Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur Of The Year Finalist Award, and accepted ComputerWorld's Hero's Award. He also serves on the board of directors of the Connecticut Technology Council and the Internet Streaming Media Alliance. Most recently, he was named one of the top most influential people in the streaming media industry by Streaming Magazine, and he has authored many articles on the subject of Streaming Media which have appeared in the top industry journals.

 
 

Markus Moenig

Markus Moenig is the senior vice president and chief technology officer for DivX, Inc. Prior to joining the DivX management team in February 2008, Markus was the CEO for MainConcept which was acquired by DivX in November 2007. MainConcept is a wholly owned subsidiary of DivX, Inc. Markus Moenig began working on video technology and video related projects at the age of 15. In 1993 he founded MainConcept, and as its CEO, grew the company into one of the world’s leading independent suppliers of award-winning video codec technologies. At age 36, Markus has already accumulated more than two decades of experience in the consumer and professional video markets.
MainConcept’s primary focus is to create and license its core technologies to enable fast, high-quality video processing and streaming. MainConcept currently licenses its line of codecs – including DV, MPEG, VC-1, H.264 and JPEG2000 – to a variety of different platforms. Together, DivX and MainConcept will continue to develop and deploy innovative next-generation video technologies that further bridge the gap between the PC, the living room and versatile mobile environments.
Markus has been a member of the board of directors of the MPEG Industry Forum since 2006.

Sean McCarthy
Principal Scientist, Motorola

Dr. Sean McCarthy brings to Modulus Video many years’ experience as an engineer and research scientist in small and large organizations. Before joining Modulus Video, Sean helped found ViaSense where, as Chief Scientist, he led technical development of commercial applications based on understanding the human visual system. Some of the applications that Sean developed include: a system for optimizing video compression; a system for optimizing video displays; methods of extracting natural features in images and video; and methods of measuring the perceptual quality of processed images and video. He is also the author of several papers on retinal processing and holds several domestic and international patents on image and signal processing. In addition to his role at Modulus Video, Sean is currently serves as a member of the board of directors of the MPEG Industry Forum. Sean earned his Ph.D. in bioengineering jointly at UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco.


Working Group Chairmen

Ralph Neff (Logo Qualificaion Working Group Chair)

Ralph Neff received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1992, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California at Berkeley in 1994 and 2000, respectively. He worked as a researcher at UC Berkeley's Video and Image Processing (VIP) lab, where he developed the first efficient video compression algorithms based on Matching Pursuits. Dr. Neff has been the recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship, and the Okawa Foundation Fellowship. He received a Best Student Paper Award for a paper presented at the 1999 International Conference on Image Processing, and is the co-recipient (with Dr. Avideh Zakhor) of an IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Best Paper Award. He has been active in standardization bodies, attending MPEG during the development of the MPEG-4 standard, and later participating in 3GPP, 3GPP2, Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), and Wireless Multimedia Forum (WMF). He is a strong supporter of open interoperability testing groups, and currently serves as co-chair of the Packet-Switched Streaming Services Activity Group (PSS-AG) within the International Multimedia Telecommunications Consortium (IMTC), and also as co-chair of the Interoperability Working Group in the MPEG Industry Forum (MPEGIF). He led the efforts to establish the MPEGIF Logo Qualification program, a self-qualification program for H.264 / MPEG-4 part 10 video codec solutions. Ralph is currently a Senior Member of Technical Staff at PacketVideo, which develops cutting edge multimedia solutions for mobile phones and other embedded devices. He is in charge of Standards and Interoperability testing, and leads the development of new technologies for 2-way multimedia communications.

Jae-Seob Shin (Interop Working Group Chair)

Jae-Seob Shin was born in Andong, the Republic Of Korea(ROK) in April 1963. He received the M.Sc.(1987) and the B.Sc (1985) degrees in Electronic Engineering from SoGang University (SGU), the ROK.
In 1987, He joined Digital Signal Processing Laboratories in Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology(SAIT), the ROK. He conducted research in the area of image processing and video coding.
During the research period, he was a member of team which developed the Desk-top Image Scanner, High Speed Alpha-numeric character recognition algorithm and system, JPEG built-in board for IBM-PC. He has worked on video compression technologies for multimedia application since 1993.
Several kinds of technologies that were developed by his team have been selected as candidates of MPEG-4 International Standard since he joined to the ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11(MPEG) in 1992 as a member of Korean delegation. He also did a chairing position for the Version Management ad-hoc group of MPEG from November 1997 to March 1998. He is now in chairing position of Interoperability Work Group in MPEG Industry Forum. He was a Principal Investigator in the MPEG-4 audio-visual coding team in SAIT from 1990 to 2000. His research interests are in the area of image processing, video coding and computer vision. His work in this area resulted in more than 45 patents and patent applications. He established a venture company named "Pixtree Technologies, Inc." in 2002. He is now a CEO/President of the company.
